Opinion: What the law can do to protect mail-in voting

We are facing, at this very moment, an unprecedented threat to the core of our democracy: the right to vote. The United States Postal Service has adopted severe cost-cutting measures and vital equipment has been taken out of service — right on the brink of an election likely to involve record numbers of mail-in ballots, given safety issues posed by the novel coronavirus. President Donald Trump eliminated any doubt about his strategy when he brazenly declared that he opposes fully funding the USPS because he disfavors mail-in ballots. (Trump repeatedly has claimed, without evidence, that mail-in ballots lead to significant voter fraud.)
